An Underground show is special because you get new bands, veteran bands, English bands, French bands, marching bands (we did have one) and of course good old fashioned Cantopop bands. But that’s not what Nowhere Boys is. They’re Cantopop, they use ‘old’ music (we’ll get to that), but they’re not old fashioned.
What first struck me was the violin. Standing in the corner was keyboardist Fisher Kan who decided to whip out a violin for their first song 天外飛仙 (Little Fairy). In their musical video, the band members dress up in classical Chinese outfits and do Kung-fu outside Yau Ma Tei Tin Hau temple, and rock-out next to the Star Ferry pier. They didn’t show up in costume but the whimsical, yet hardcore vibe was just as present. The violin was a little quiet, it could have been the mics, or it could have been their placement, but it would have been great to hear it more.
The second song 狂想曲 (Rhapsody) gave more surprises yet. Released in 2015 near the beginning of their career, the song is an eclectic mix of hard rock, Baroque piano, choir music, rap and more. Nowhere Boys is a band which excels in both recorded and live forms; they understand the difference between the two media and artistically transform themselves depending on what their stage is. In the Rhapsody music video, the band members don different outfits showing the many sides of the band, someone’s the Joker, someone’s a cop, they’re in an old timey Hong Kong style barbershop – then everyone changes roles. The chorale section has very strong Queen vibes and seems to reference Bohemian Rhapsody. For such a chaotic video, the performance is actually incredibly tight but not overwhelming. On stage, however, they change completely. The whole performance is a musical whirlwind. The hard rock starts, pinning you to your seat. Then the baroque piano solo comes in – in the video, it’s underscored by black and white visuals – here the whole band stops and points synchronized at the pianist to great applause. The performance is intense; they’re jumping around the stage yelling into mics but then comes the chorale. Everyone stops and sings in perfect acapella harmony despite having just run a marathon.
There’s something to be said for a Cantopop band incorporating so much classic rock, pop and classical music into their performances. Hong Kong is a city where almost everyone has a Grade 8 in musical performance, but becoming a musician is not a career most people will consider. It’s unrealistic, useless, for a hobby only. Our professional choirs and opera groups are performed in by amazing award-winning singers who are actually bankers and doctors. This means that just in terms of classical music knowledge, Hong Kong really is world class – much of local slang actually comes from musical terminology – but it’s ignored. Nowhere Boys whether they know it or not, is bridging that gap. As a rock Cantopop group, they excel perfectly with creative lyrics, great stage presence and top-notch performance, but more than that, they encompass the musical soul of Hong Kong, telling those that play classical music that the pop world does have a space for them and simultaneously letting popular music fans know that the classical side also has a place. Their creativity and performance style weren’t just for a good show, it was inspirational. At least it was to me – a classically trained musician writing rock show reviews.

When I say I miss the stage, I’m not only referring to the two hours of live performance that you all see. I miss myself. I miss who I am during the process: learning new repertoire, spending endless hours in solitude learning all the notes at the piano, reading and looking up each word in the dictionary, trying to get the pronunciation and colouring of the text as authentic as possible. It’s the time spent observing, imitating, and drawing inspiration from all the great artists through dvds and videos. It’s the process of igniting my imagination, and gradually getting into the shoes of a new role, and finding new things about an old piece or a character along the way of rehearsing with other musicians. It’s the incomparable satisfaction of hearing my voice resonate and project into a big space with no artificial amplification. It’s the exchange of energy with people around me. It’s feeling that I want to pour my heart and soul out to the world through music without expecting anything in return. Everything in this process, including the really scary moments in which I doubt everything I do, to the exciting feeling of overcoming those obstacles and making little breakthroughs and connecting with the music and the people around… I miss them all. Right now I’m learning something which is a bit of a foreign concept: patience. I need patience to be at peace with the uncertainty of everything. 2020 is the first time in years that I’m forced (or given space and time) to sit down and listen to my inner voice, instead of singing with my soprano voice.

BMW M135i vs Mercedes AMG A35 vs Mini Clubman JCW
For years now, #BMW has been insisting that the vast majority of 1-Series customers are not worried about whether the engine drives the front or rear wheels. It would therefore be a shame for the same customers that the new 1-Series switched to front-wheel drive, unless in that case as #M135i ... which is now systematically linked to the xDrive four-wheel drive. What about the sporty temperament without the typical driving behavior of a rear-wheel driver? And what driving sensations can we expect from a chassis that is ultimately designed for a front wheel tractor? Does the 135i actually deserve its M badge? These are all questions we try to answer based on a comparative test of BMW's youngest sportsman with two of his biggest competitors: the #Mercedes-#AMG A 35 4Matic and the #Mini #Clubman JCW All4.
The changeover to the BMW front-wheel-drive architecture is reflected in the new proportions and flowing, elongated lines of the all-new BMW 1-Series. The shorter bonnet melts into the windscreen, while the long roofline drops away slightly towards the rear. A wide tail with an athletic shoulderline above the rear wheel arches emphasises the car's powerful, sporty presence when viewed from behind. At the same time, the compact body offers significantly more space within a footprint almost identical to the predecessor model's and so makes the car even more versatile in everyday use. At 4,319 millimetres, the new BMW 1-Series is five millimetres shorter than its predecessor. In terms of width (now 1,799 millimetres), this third-generation model has grown by 34 millimetres while its height (1,434 mm) has increased by 13 millimetres. At 2,670 millimetres, the wheelbase is 20 millimetres shorter than that of the predecessor model.
Of the various engines available for the new BMW 1-Series, it is the newly developed four-cylinder unit under the bonnet of the BMW M135i xDrive that really steals the show. It is the BMW Group's most powerful four-cylinder engine, extracting 225 kW (306 hp) from its 2.0-litre displacement between 5,000 and 6,250 rpm with the help of BMW TwinPower Turbo technology. Its peak torque of 450 Nm (332 lb-ft) comes on stream at 1,750 rpm and stays there up to 4,500 rpm. The flagship model races to 100 km/h (62 mph) from rest in just 4.8 seconds (4.7 seconds with M Performance package, available from 11/2019), while top speed is limited to 250 km/h (155 mph). Despite such breathtaking performance figures, the BMW M135i xDrive makes do with 7.1 - 6.8 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres (39.8 - 41.5 mpg imp) on the combined cycle and emits just 162 - 155 grams of CO2 per kilometre.
Emotional, agile and digital: with the A35 4MATIC Mercedes-AMG is presenting a completely new entry-level model to the world of driving performance. It is based on the new Mercedes compact vehicle platform and is powered by a new 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo engine with output of 225 kW (306 hp). Body shell, suspension, all-wheel drive, transmission, drive programs, fine tuning - every detail has been designed for maximum driving dynamics without compromising on everyday comfort. The performance at sports car level (acceleration 0-100 km/h in 4.7 seconds) and the specific design also strengthen its identity as a member of the performance family. A true AMG for the Hot Hatch stage!
The AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7G dual-clutch transmission also contributes to the agile and dynamic character of the new A35 4MATIC. The gear ratios have been configured so that the driver experiences very spontaneous acceleration in all speed ranges, combined with fast shifting and optimum connections when shifting up. The standard RACE-START function allows maximum acceleration from stationary and is a highly emotional experience. The functions of the AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7G transmission are rounded off with a temporary M mode activated by operating the steering wheel shift paddles in any driving mode, and with the manual transmission mode "M" for manual gear shifting with the shift paddles.
As the power source for extreme driving fun, the comprehensively redesigned 4-cylinder engine has been consistently oriented towards maximum output. It is based on the 2.0 litre drive from the MINI Cooper S Clubman and MINI Cooper S Countryman but has now undergone model-specific modifications to the crankshaft drive and also benefits from the latest generation of MINI TwinPower Turbo technology. These modifications are based on the John Cooper Works' racing know-how and comprise a reinforced crankshaft, a main bearing with an extended cross-section, specific pistons, connecting rods, and a new vibration damper with optimised cooling.
The high-performance drive of the new MINI John Cooper Works Clubman and the new MINI John Cooper Works Countryman generates a maximum torque of 450 Nm in the broad engine speed range between 1 750 and 4 500 rpm, which is around 28 percent higher than that of the previous engine. The maximum output of the new 4-cylinder engine has been increased by approximately 32 percent. The new top level of 225 kW/306 hp is reached between 5 000 and 6 250 rpm. The resulting pulling power enables the new engine of the MINI John Cooper Works Clubman to produce an acceleration performance of 0 to 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds, while the figure for the new MINI John Cooper Works Countryman is 5.1 seconds, ensuring an impressive level of elasticity during spontaneous speed bursts. For the first time with MINI vehicles, the maximum speed of the new top sports performer is now electronically limited to 250 km/h.

2004年底組成,成軍十年的The White Eyes白目樂隊音樂風格涵蓋Garage、Punk等迷幻骯髒的暴力元素,以極具煽動力的現場演出著稱。08年拿下貢寮海洋音樂季(Hohaiyan)海洋音樂大賞,專輯《Kiss Your Eyes》獲得第22屆金曲獎最佳專輯包裝,曾為The Music、These New Puritans、The Flaming Lips等國際樂隊擔任共演嘉賓,足跡踏遍國內外音樂祭,美國SXSW、日本SUMMER SONIC、春天吶喊、野台開唱等,以及各地Live House巡迴演出。

Exhibition Introduction:
Since the launch of ‘Art Street’, Museum of Contemporary Art, Taipei has explored diverse possibilities for art and for all by introducing contemporary art to living space. In the spring of 2015, MOCA Taipei partners with Elite Taipei Station Store to co-present the fourth exhibition and invites Taiwan Indie bands and emerging fashion designers to co-create a duo-feast consisting of music and visual sense. Through this cross-disciplinary experimental collaboration, we discuss the visual approaches of music performance on stage.
Since 2009 on, the White Eyes has worked with fashion designer Hikky Chen to develop a series of stage costumes and profiles, which they wear to attend many music events both overseas and domestically. This exhibition entitled Inorganic Evolution-The White Eyes X Hikky Chen could be regarded as a celebration of its founding for a decade. In addition to examine the creational history in the past ten years, the design profiles are also presented. Having an exhibition at the K1 and K2 square of Elite Taipei Station Store where the mass crowd and traffic gather, we expect to initiate a fusion of diverse creative culture and art as well as to further interpret the indie Avant-garde fashion of the White Eyes.
Extending the Punk and Riot Girls style in the early years, the White Eyes set up strong image in the circle of Taiwan Indie bands and they won grand prize at Ho-hai-yan Rock Festival; in recent years, the vocalist and bass player Chung-yu Fan form “Half of White Eyes” side project. While persuading further experimental spirit in the music presentation, the band also engages in several cross-disciplinary projects. The collaboration between the White Eyes and Hikky Chen implies the beginning of another stage, which the long-lasting Punk spirit, rebelling, critical against the conventional concepts, respect to individuals with different values, and the pursuing of liberation are all shown in their creation.
The stage costumes by Hikky Chen are mostly inspired by the elements in the Nature, including the mineral colors and textures, and the primitive quality of grey cloth. Therefore, most of costumes are made by retailing and assembling recycled clothing and unwanted fabrics. The colors are made from the technique of tea dying and show a warm, tender and natural hue. The texture and color hues are full of primitive charm, which is exactly like the liberation manifesto by the band. Moreover, daily life and pets of band vocalist Hsiao-gao Gao are resources of inspiration as well.
The White Eyes organized their ten-year anniversary concert at the end of 2014. It is an important evolution for the White Eyes to present the audio sense through costumes and visual profiles. This is the intention behind the collaboration between the band and fashion designer. Based on this reason, the exhibition is organized to present the achievement of a decade. On stage, the White Eyes not only performs physically, but also expresses their music faith via unique costumes. With the concepts of inorganic evolution, this exhibition looks forward to further inspiring more diverse imaginations and possibilities of cross- disciplinary creation among creators from different fields.
